The Abbey Singers was formed in 1962 by Andrew Seivewright during his time as Master of Music at Carlisle Cathedral from 1960-1991. The choir takes its name from the Cathedral Close, which is known as 'The Abbey' and maintains its relationship with the Cathedral through making it the venue for some of its major concerts and singing the Eucharist on a regular basis. The Dean of Carlisle holds the position of patron.
The choir has earned a high reputation for choral singing under its two previous Directors, the second of which, Elizabeth Lamb, did much for the choir's vocal technique. Abbey Singers is fortunate to have members who are soloists in their own right and are able to perform the solo roles. The choir's repertoire consists of a wide range of music from oratorio to popular music. Abbey Singers has made several recording, including two CDs, 'Abbey Singers - A Portrait' and 'In every corner Sing'. With its new Director of Music, Jeremy Suter, who was appointed in January 2001, the choir is returning to its roots at the Cathedral. Jeremy is taking the choir's high standard of choral singing into new and wider spheres of music. |
