JEREMY SUTER - DIRECTOR OF MUSIC OF ABBEY SINGERSJeremy Suter was born in London and began his musical education as a chorister at Westminster Abbey under Sr William McKie. After completing his general education at Harrow he spent two years at the Royal College of Music before going up to Oxford as Organ Scholar of Magdalen College under Bernard Rose. Following a year's postgraduate study at the University of Pennsylvania Jeremy was invited to return to Magdalen for two terms in order to direct the Chapel Choir whilst Dr Rose took a sabbatical. In 1975 he was appointed Organist of the busy Civic Church of All Saints', Northampton and Head of Music at All Saints' Middle School. Between 1981 and 1991 he was Assistant Organist at Chichester Cathedral and Director of Music at the Prebendal School. Here his organ accompaniments were much admired and featured on many broadcasts and recordings made by the Choir of Chichester Cathedral. Since taking up his appointment in 1991 as Master of the Music at Carlisle Cathedral Jeremy has been instrumental in expanding the Border Cathedrals Festival and enhancing the reputation of the Cathedral Choir. They have taken part in many prestigious events both in Great Britain and abroad and have recorded two CDs. An acknowledged solo recitalist Jeremy has played in Europe and America as well as many places in the United Kingdom. As Chairman of Music in the Cathedral he is responsible for arranging an increasingly popular and successful programme of concerts and recitals. He is also involved in the Royal School of Church Music, the Cumbrian Society of Organists and works regularly with the Cockermouth Harmonic Society. Jeremy was appointed to become the Director of Music of Abbey Singers from January 2001. He takes on the mantle of his predecessor at the Cathedral, Andrew Seivewright, who founded the Abbey Singers and carries on the work of Elizabeth Lamb whom he follows as Director of Music. Jeremy will bring to the choir his own special expertise in choral directing and musical knowledge to take Abbey Singers into the new Millennium and to new levels of choral experience and excellence. |
